Angie J Review:

I received this novella from the author for an honest review of the book.

OMG I was so excited to read this novella because I am such a Sci-Fi NERD!!!!  Firefly, Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Gallactica, etc......... When I saw the list of Sci-Fi movies, I knew I was gonna love this book.  Shiney! Captain Tightpants is my favorite cancelled TV space captain of alllll time!
Ok so this book is sooo fun.  It is a quick 46 page ecopy book but it is filled with sarcasm, wit, sexiness and a lot of humor.  It is basically a story of 2 people who are set up my a "mysterious" person to meet the person of their dreams.   I loved the "pre-date" gaming that Mirjam has to have done per Jenn the girl who organized the date.  All she wants to do it eat dinner and  then ditch the guy for a Sci-Fi movie marathon in her hotel room!!  But they finally meet up, they realize they know each other from high school.  Both people remember being attracted to the other BUT thinking that other wouldn't ever be interested in them.  Riley moved away and always thought of Mirjam and she wondered what became of him also.
The sexual tension in the story is great.  I was laughing in the beginning and then saying "Hawt" towards the middle.  When they finally *cough cough* well you know, it was gooood reading.  I loved this book and was so glad that Angela sent it to be read.  I cant wait to read more of her stories.  I will say IF you are not a Sci-Fi fan you MAY be lost on some of the references but you could still read the novel.  So below I am posting a clip of the book that gave me a good giggle.  It will show you the humor of the novel.

My Review:
This is a wonderful little book. It reads really quickly so it's great for when you need a quick romance fix. The book is about Riley and Mirjam, two attractive people who are really geeks at different conventions in Las Vegas. Mirjam is a computer programmer. Riley owns a beer brewery. They knew each other in high school and were fascinated, but never got the chance to act on anything before Riley moved away before their junior year. They've never been in contact since and in fact, live in totally different parts of the country.

For me, this book worked because the two main characters have that connection from high school. They aren't complete strangers. They are also both at a point in their lives where they've achieved some success, but need something more than work. They just don't realize that something more is a relationship.

I really liked the Jenn/Jim aspect of the story. This character is the djinn and responsible for the magic of the main characters' meeting. It added a great magical aspect to the story and can I just say?? I'd love Jenn to come and grant me a wish or two. Seriously, the pampering Mirjam received...totally jealous!

It really is just truly a fun read. It's written really well. It's short, but the author gives you snippets about these characters so you feel like you really know them and can connect to them. Probably my only one real complaint is the title of the story....it makes the book sound much more crass than it is. Truly, this is really just a really romantic little read. And yes, it's hot too, but it's not a down and dirty kind of smexy which is how the title makes it sound.

Beers And Cheers

First up...The Beers!

I read this cute, quick, sexy story by Angela Quarles last week--Beer and Groping in Las Vegas. The title hooked me instantly. It's awesome! This is a short contemporary, with a paranormal premise, two geeky characters, tons of pop culture references (including Monty Python and Star Wars similes), some sexy times with beer (original and very well done), finishing up with a sweet HEA. There was a bit too much sex for such a short story--I would have preferred more dialogue--but I liked how Quarles managed to squeeze in some sweet, touching sentiments with all the boinking. Overall, a nice debut with room to grow. And I especially appreciate having geeky characters who fall in love.

Beer and Grouping In Las VegasBeer and Groping in Las Vegas by Angela Quarles
Genre: Contemporary Paranormal Romance

This was a fun quick read involving a quirky romance that was set up by a djinn.  Short stories and novellas can make me leery of wanting to give them a try because not everyone who writes one understands just how to achieve a good balance of plot, pacing and character development to fit into the page count they have.  Fortunately, this author did a great job so I ended up with an enjoyable reading experience that had me reading with a smile on my face and an ‘ah’ of satisfaction coming from my lips by the end.

Basically, the story is about two people that have gotten very caught up in their work and checked out of life because they have been burned once too often by their chances at romance.  Both of them feel that there is no one out there who can understand and accept them for who they are.  By coincidence, they both end up in Vegas for work related conferences right in the middle of a geeky favorite characters convention giving them a chance to let their inner geekiness show.  Riley and Mirjam are brought together on a blind date with the help of a magical slot machine and a mysterious character in pink called Jenn or Jim.  The blind date reveals that they might just have a shot at their wildest dreams if they will just take a chance and grasp for it with both hands.

Riley and Mirjam (Finnish and pronounced something like Meer-yam) apart are staid workaholics who are busy hiding behind barriers to protect their hearts, but I loved how the plot took them from that to caring and passionate hot lovers who want nothing more at the end of the night, but for it all to continue.  That Riley was something, he had my toes curling with pleasure whether it was his turn to tell the story or Mirjam’s.  I loved how the tight Mirjam took a step of faith and let herself go with Riley.

So, I can heartily recommend this one to those who enjoy a quirky magical contemporary Happy For Now with promise of the future romance with not a lot of time to read.

Beer and Groping in Las VegasBeer and Groping in Las Vegas by Angela Quarles. It’s the story of two people, thrust together by a djinn and some magic. Mirjam and Riley share a past and haven’t seen each other since they were teenagers. They both have a bit of a geek sci-fi side which is fun to read. I mean, George Takei has a cameo…fucking George Takei, “oh my” has a cameo, be still my Star Trek loving heart. (sorry, did I just come out of the Star Trek closet with you? are you okay with that? we’re not fighting are we? I’d hate to knock you out with my Vulcan death grip). And Riley went to UNC (Carolina, Carolina, fight, fight, fight!) and Mirjam went to dook…I mean duke – sorry, I’m not allowed to type that particular school name with a capital letter. It’s a Carolina rule. (And Mirjam is a Finnish name, learned that in the book). Anyway the djinn (a spirit often capable of assuming human or animal form and exercising supernatural influence over people) works its magic – gets these long lost loves back together, they have some scandalicious sex in Vegas and well, I won’t spoil the ending. I recommend the story. Again, it’s short, Amazon lists it at 52 pages but I’m going to put it more in the 40+ category pagewise. The cost, $3.99. Is that too steep for your pocketbook? Even though it’s a really entertaining story, is that price going to cause you to send me shouty emails? I can honestly say I’ve paid more for bigger names and longer books and been far less entertained, hell, some of them straight up sucked. I’ve also paid less for bigger names and longer books and been equally entertained. What’s your ratio for book prices? Do you have a hard limit when it comes to length? See what I did there, it’s so easy to go dirty when I’m having coffee with you guys. My hard limit is when the e-book price is the same or close to the same as the paperback price – that’s straight up crazy town for me and just ain’t happening on my watch. If you want a funny, sexy, slightly geeky quick read, Beer and Groping in Las Vegas is the book for you. Tell me what you think. Let’s talk this bitch out.

Mirjam Linna is a workaholic. Since her ex decided to trade up she seems to have lost the ability to actually live life and just plods through life. When her flight out of Vegas is delayed due to bad weather a Djinn offers to grant her wish of a night with her dream man which she reluctantly accepts.

Riley McGregor wants a woman who accepts his inner geek he’s looking for a woman with beauty and brains, someone he can talk to and share his life with. While in Las Vegas for a conference he finds himself accepting a Djinn’s offer of a night with the woman of his dreams.

When Riley discovers his blind date is Mirjam the girl he had a major crush on in high school he’s ecstatic. Riley has dreamt of her for years and he’s not disappointed in the woman she’s become. She’s smart but she also has an inner geek of her own. He’s determined to make it last more than the one night they’ve agreed to.

Ms Quarles requested that I review her book saying that she believed it was something I’d enjoy reading. To be honest when I saw the title and read the blurb I groaned but as it was a special request I loaded my ereader.

Boy was I surprised Ms Quarles must be psychic as I fell into this book right away. It’s what I term an easy read it takes no effort at all to read and the plot drifts along at a steady clip. The Characters are believable and everything just gels. Those who have an inner geek of their own will love it and those that don’t will enjoy it. If you’re looking for a feel good novella this is the one for you.

I learnt a valuable lesson during this review not only can’t you judge a book by its cover you most certainly can’t judge a book by its title. Ms Quarles may not realize it but she gave me a wonderful gift and has earned a spot on my must watch list.

Trapped in a Las Vegas hotel for the night, Mirjam meets a mysterious woman who tells her to get the man of her dreams, all Mirjam has to do is wish on a slot machine.  Figuring she's got nothing else to do, she makes her wish, and ends up on a blind date with a man.  She figures she'll have a nice dinner, then go back to her room and forget the night ever happened.  But she's surprised to find she knows her date.  Or rather, she knew him back when they were kids.  Riley has grown up into a handsome, successful brewery owner, and is shocked to find the woman sitting across from him is the girl he used to crush on way back when.  When a strange man told him to wish on a slot machine for the girl of his dreams, he never expected Mirjam, but is thrilled to find they share so much in common.  One thing leads to another, but will the tender feelings they had over dinner survive the harsh light of reality?

This was a short and sweet love story about two geeks who've given up on finding that perfect someone for them.  When a wish made in jest turns out to be the best thing that happened to them both, they begin to see that wishes can come true.  Riley is looking for someone that will like him for him, and not his money.  Mirjam is looking for someone to share her life with that won't run off on her when something better comes along.  It was a tender, heartwarming story about second chances and being brave enough to reach for what you want, even if you don't realize you want it at the time.

4 STAR REVIEWS / BOOK REVIEWS

beerandgropinginlasvegasThe blurb on the cover of Beer and Groping says that “Fans of Star Trek, Star Wars, Monty Python, Firefly and Marvin the Martian will enjoy this romantic comedy.” Enjoy? How about “absolutely love”? Because I adored this short, sweet and very funny read immensely!

Set in a hotel playing host to a fan convention (and this story is SO much better if you’ve attended one of those), Beer and Groping sees geeks Mirjam Linna and Riley McGregor brought together by mysterious forces. Mirjam, dumped by her boyfriend, decides that dinner with a stranger is as far as she’ll go… before discovering her date is the guy she lusted at back in high school.

Drawn together by a shared love of science fiction and British humour, Mirjam and Riley go on to have a very hot night in her hotel room, but neither wants to leave it at that. Neither wants to admit to that either. Characters who don’t communicate annoy me a little, but the length of this story saves that awkwardness from lasting too long. There is a happy-for-now that leaves the reader on a fluffy cloud of happiness.

Beer and Groping is a short, and I think it works well as one. However, I would love it if the author wrote a similar, longer work, because the geeky humour mixed with the hot sex was a combination that really worked for me. I even forgave the one-night-stand-leading-to-everlasting-love trope, which usually annoys me to be honest.

As it is, if Angela Quarles writes something else like Beer and Groping, I’ll definitely be reading it.

The author built a spectacular, character-centric, story about discovering love {with a little help from a djinn}. This was a sexy, fun, and geeky novella-length read about how a relationship can develop overnight. The author created characters with realistic fears and insecurities – and the impact of having someone love you…for you.

Have you ever read a blurb so intriguing that you disregarded the fact it’s not within your customary genres? That is exactly what happened when I read about Riley and Mirjam. I HIGHLY recommend this read – both the blurb and cover grabbed my attention {the title not so much}.

Adult Excerpt

Mirjam rubbed the tiredness from her eyes, but the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland still occupied the Rivenbark Hotel & Casino elevator with her. She blinked and squinted. Yep. And life-size. Complete with hookah.

Plastic squeaked against glass as the caterpillar shifted to make more room. It made eye contact.

"Er, nice costume," Mirjam ventured.

"Thanks," came the muffled reply.

The elevator swooped to a stop on the mezzanine level. A pirate and a Ghostbuster stepped on and pushed the lobby button. Mirjam angled back to avoid being knocked over by the guy's Proton Pack.

"Convention?" Mirjam asked the caterpillar and it rewarded her with a nod.

Mirjam groaned inwardly. She'd attended her share, but now, they reminded her too much of The Turd, otherwise known as Brian. Great. She wanted to go home but apparently, that was asking too much—a blizzard in Ann Arbor nixed her flight this morning. Next chance to get out—tomorrow.

The elevator dinged at the lobby, and she headed to the hotel bar. Maybe she could salvage the day by squeezing in some work.

"What can I get you?" The bartender sported a headband with gold, sparkly antennae in her pink, cropped hair.

Mirjam pulled out her laptop. "Sprite, please." Only a few others populated the bar, too early for drinking. Though this was Vegas. Pink Hair Lady plopped down Mirjam’s drink, the stir stick topped by a wiggling green rubber alien.

"So, which convention is this?" Mirjam motioned to a couple of Spartans walking by, though they probably shouldn't have chosen that look.

"It's ConVegas—sci-fi, fantasy, pop culture, that kind of thing. Doesn't start until tomorrow, but we always get some folks early. What brings you here?"

"AppExpo that ended last night." Mirjam connected to the hotel's free WiFi. Time to figure out what caused her new app to choke while compiling.

Pink Hair Lady cocked her hip, fist resting on the bone. "Lemme guess. You're always working, aren't you?" She slid a glass bowl of pistachios over. "This is Vegas. You should be out having fun."

Fun. Pfft. No time for that. "My flight got canceled and the timing blows. Too much to do. I didn't want to come, but my partner thought it might be good for business."

"Was it?"

Mirjam shrugged and pulled up and scanned her code, hoping her fixed focus on the laptop would clue Chatty One to leave her alone.

"I'm Jenn, by the way."

Mirjam peeked up and pasted on a smile. "Nice to meet you." She tracked back to the code.

The bartender left to help another customer but returned her inquisitive butt a few minutes later. "So, Vegas at your feet and your nose is to the grindstone. This is truly what you wish to do with your unexpected free night?"

Mirjam gritted her teeth. If Jenn would stop pestering her, she might be able to figure out the rendering bug. "No. If I had my wish, I'd spend it having hot sex with the man of my dreams, but since that's not going to happen…" she snapped.

The bartender's eyes flashed for a second. Or had they literally flashed?

Mirjam shook her head. She really was tired. "Sorry. Don't mind me."

"No worries, I'll leave you to your work." Jenn smiled and strode to the other end of the bar.

No matter how long Mirjam stared at the code, the solution eluded her. Man, she could use a nap. She motioned to Jenn and settled her tab.

"Have fun in Vegas. Here," Jenn fished in her back pocket, "try the slot machine on the corner there. On me." She slid a dollar across the counter. "I hear one gets lucky with it."

Mirjam tried to shove the bill back, but Jenn kept her hand in place, pinning the bill to the counter with a bright pink fingernail. "I insist."

Oh, what would it hurt? "Okay, thanks. I will."

She packed away her laptop and swung the bag over her shoulder. At the machine, she fed in the dollar and received three credits. Yank. Nothing. Yank. Nothing. Yank. Ding, ding, ding! Mirjam jumped back, a rotating red light atop the machine joining the cacophony.

Thunk.

What in the—

Mirjam peered into the output tray and scooped out a heavy-stock envelope with a pink wax seal, not the expected handful of chips one hopes for in Las Vegas. She flipped it over. Embossed on the front, her name—Mirjam Linna.

Adult Excerpt:

She vaulted into his arms and twined her legs around his waist. He stumbled back and gripped her butt, pressing her tight against his erection. She moved her hips. Yes, right…there. He captured her mouth in a searing kiss, his tongue skillfully stroking hers, mimicking the rhythm she couldn't wait to do with him soon.

He backed up until they hit the French doors with a thud. He tore his mouth from hers. "Could you?"

"Huh?" She freed herself from the lust fog. His head tilted to the door handle. She pushed down with her heel, and he bumped it open with his back, stumbling inside backward. She fumbled with the buttons on his shirt, jerked the shirttails out of his khakis, and pushed his shirt off his shoulders.

Wow, was he ripped! His arm muscles bunched from holding her. Hoo boy, there might even be an ab or two peeking out. She slid her hands up his smooth chest as he backed her to the king-size bed. He tumbled with her onto the fluffy comforter, and they both laughed.

He framed her face with his hands and leaned in for another kiss, pressing his body against hers. Mmm. His weight, so masculine and yummy. It'd been too long.

He broke the kiss, glanced down, and pulled the string tying her top at her hip. He eased the fabric away and his gaze roamed her stomach and breasts, cinched up nice and perky in the Victoria's Secret, red lace bra. Along with matching panties.

Thank you, Jenn.

He gave a low rumble and licked her collarbone, peppering hot kisses down to the swell of her breasts.

She reached behind to unsnap her bra, eager for his mouth to be on her in a big way. He stopped her. "Let me." He slipped a finger under one strap and, fingers grazing her skin, eased it over her shoulder. And then the other. Hot sparks shot through her with each touch. He tugged the fabric down over one nipple, leaned forward, and stopped.

"Hang on a sec." He scrambled from the bed.

Huh? Wait—what? Oh God, what was he doing? Did he have to choose this moment to go to the bathroom or something? But no, he headed for the sitting area. Curious, she leaned up on her elbows.

He strode back into the room, his movements confident and liquid and oh-so-male. This is really happening. His eyes sparkled with mischief, one arm hidden behind his back. "Close your eyes."

Totally trusting him, she did so. She giggled, a thread of excitement bubbling through her. The bed dipped with his weight. Something chilly and wet moved up her belly. She gasped and her eyes flew open. He held a fresh bottle of his beer and circled its base slowly around her stomach. He inched it upward and gently blew on the trail of moisture left behind. She shivered and an ache built within, making her legs restless. He used the bottle to ease the fabric off her other breast, her nipple afire. Her arms no longer able to support her, she fell back against the pillows with a groan. She jerked when his hot mouth gently sucked the same nipple, a stark contrast to the cold of a moment before.

"Oh, God, Riley, you're killing me."

He chuckled and flicked her nipple with his tongue, grazing it with his teeth. Liquid heat pooled in her core, and she tangled her fingers in his hair, the silky feel teasing her fingers.

"You like this?" His sexy voice blended erotically with the sensations he aroused inside her.

She thrust her chest up, wanting more. "Oh, yes!"

Jeez, he was wickedly talented with that tongue of his. He played with the other breast in the same way, and she thrashed on the bed, needing more; impatient for more. He tugged the bra down farther, the fabric's tension making her breasts thrust higher. He suckled hard on one nipple, tweaked the other, and all while he eased her silk skirt up her leg with the cold bottle.

When it reached the apex of her thighs, he slowly pressed it against her mound. Shudders coursed through her. She gripped the bottle tight with her thighs, loving the cool contrast against her now-molten flesh. It was so intense, even through her panties she almost couldn't stand it but gripped it tighter all the same and rocked against it. Pleasure built in waves, bringing her closer and closer to the pinnacle. But before she could shatter, he pulled it away with a mischievous smile.

"Riley!"

He winked and trickled dollops of the cold beer into her belly button then lapped it up. She bucked and cool trails speared down her sides. He chased them with his tongue, the sensual glide causing goose bumps to erupt all over.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

She trembled and clutched the sheets tightly in her fists. He kissed, sucked, and licked his wicked way back to her now-aching breasts, neglected for far too long by his talented mouth, and circled each nipple with his tongue. She gasped, grabbed his face, and dragged him up for a kiss, needing him too badly to worry about finesse.

He responded to her hunger with deep strokes of his tongue, his muscled body settling above her, crushing her breasts against his chest. She cinched her arms around his back, under his shirt. Needing him closer still, she threw a leg around one of his and pressed her hips against his rock-hard erection.

"Too many clothes," she gasped. She pushed him away, grabbed his buckle, and yanked it open, her hands shaking like crazy, her arm movements restricted by the fallen bra straps.

Now his zipper. She shoved him onto his back and jerked on the waistband. His eyes held hers as he lifted his hips and helped kick his legs clear. She broke free from his gaze and looked down, eager to finish unwrapping him.
